“The greatest barrier to achievement and success is not lack of talent or ability but rather the feeling that achievement and success, above a certain level, are outside our self-concept-our image of who we are and what is appropriate to us.” ~ Nathaniel Branden
Children with disabilities benefit from seeing positive representations of themselves in society. This contributes to the development of a healthy self-concept, which will fuel them on their journey to becoming the best versions of themselves. Positive statements by the people in their lives also encourage the development of a healthy self-concept. It is therefore critical that the significant adults and peers of people with disabilities use language that conveys to them that they are valued and celebrated .
As a part of the In the Spotlight Series, I will highlight an individual with a disability who is pushing against stigma and accomplishing extraordinary things. Some of these individuals are featured on Kaleb’s list in the book The Amazing Kids in My Neighborhood. This week, the spotlight is on Aaron Fotheringham. You can learn more about Aaron Fotheringham here.
How do you feel about Aaron? How is he similar to you?
